Intentions of Seattle SatSanga:

cultivate & promote like-minded community

lead accessible and affordable Yoga in an inclusive, safe and welcoming environment.

Create informed, safer, braver spaces for yoga.

We've aspired to realize these goals from the beginning at Seattle SatSanga. And yet, it's so easy to fall short of your intentions. This is my roundabout way of calling myself out, because our first "official", in-studio yoga class was not accessible.

Nestled in a building shared by the Annex theater, Current Studio lives down a creaky, winding staircase. Their hourly rates are cheap, ($11/hr)! There is a community kitchen and our room is stocked with chairs and yoga mats, good lighting and easy audio hookups. It's a dream. AND if you cant walk down a flight of stairs, none of that matters. I'm sorry. I didn't notice. The studio didn't notice. It's not posted anywhere in their online literature. and that doesn't absolve us of responsibility. In the end, it is these sorts of excuses and many others like it are a part of ableist culture (which favors those deemed able-bodied). We wish to dismantle these systems and that begins with taking an honest look at ourselves. We're sorry we missed this. We promise to do better next time, and have chosen a public park for our next yoga together gathering - Cal Anderson park on Capitol Hill https://www.facebook.com/events/224394658274172/

Ultimately un-doing internalized mechanisms (like abelism, racism, sexism, etc.) is a practice. With time, curiosity and dedication we can work together to shape a world that is for all people and their bodies. We encourage anyone out there who is learning of the concept for the first time to GET CURIOUS. Do research, show up to support Disability rights and activists. Thanks for listening and much love, Jasmine
